Verses 18-25 GROUP_1536 74.18-25
18
إِنَّهُ فَكَّرَ وَقَدَّرَ
For he thought and he plotted—
19
فَقُتِلَ كَيْفَ قَدَّرَ
and woe to him; how he plotted!
20
ثُمَّ قُتِلَ كَيْفَ قَدَّرَ
Let him be destroyed. How he calculated!
21
ثُمَّ نَظَرَ
Then he looked round;
22
ثُمَّ عَبَسَ وَبَسَرَ
then he frowned and scowled,
23
ثُمَّ أَدْبَرَ وَاسْتَكْبَرَ
and he turned his back and behaved arrogantly
24
فَقَالَ إِنْ هَذَا إِلَّا سِحْرٌ يُؤْثَرُ
and said, ‘This is nothing but sorcery from the ancients.
25
إِنْ هَذَا إِلَّا قَوْلُ الْبَشَرِ
This is nothing but the word of a mortal!’

Commentary
(a) The greatest impediment to acceptance of the Truth is a man’s egoism or pride. Those who attain a high status in society do not accept the Truth for the simple reason that, by such acceptance, their greatness will be diminished. In order to cover up their rejection, they try to find defects in the discourse of the preacher of Truth. They try to degrade him by making allegations against him.
